WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE CLASS OF 2017. THANKS TO ALL WHO APPLIED!
Our initial expectation is that the application process for the Class of 2018 will be similar to what was used this year. That process was as follows:
Candidates complete only a single application in order to be considered for positions at all of the Host Institutions, although interview questions will vary depending on the applicant and the potential host matches.
In addition to standard internship application material (transcript, résumé, letters of recommendation), applicants submit at least one 'multimedia essay' addressing one of a few questions posed within our application. This multimedia essay could take any of a wide variety of forms: a video of a rocket motor test, a recording of an original song or poem, a white paper on a matter of aerospace policy, or whatever else each applicant thinks will best captures her personality, talents, and ambitions. Our Selection Committee recognizes that students from different demographics show their talents in different ways, so this is really each applicant's opportunity to show off her proudest accomplishments and her most valued self.
Applicants are offered the opportunity to list their preferred matches from among the Host Institutions—although applicant rankings are only one of many factors considered during matching.
All completed applications are reviewed by the Brooke Owens Fellowship Selection Committee, with the most highly qualified candidates being selected for telephone interviews with Selection Committee members.
Following this process, finalists are selected and presented to the Host Institutions for matching with specific opportunities, leading to a final round of interviews directly between the candidate and the Host Institution. During this phase, additional work samples may be requested.
Selection is expected to be highly competitive.
All applications for the Class of 2017 were due by December 5 December 2016. Final notification of acceptance is expected to be delivered to all applicants around the end of January 2016.
HOW DO I APPLY?
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Brooke Owens Fellows are women currently seeking the equivalent of an undergraduate degree - through a college, university, or community college – in any field who intend to pursue a full-time career in the aviation or aerospace industry. Graduating seniors are eligible to apply.
Women of all ages, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Applicants can come from a wide range of academic or professional disciplines: engineering, science, aeronautics and pilot training, law and policy, business, non-profit management, history, art, or anything else. However, successful applicants must be able to draw a convincing connection between their chosen field(s) and aviation or space exploration.
Note that due to export control regulations, internships at many Host Institutions may be restricted to US citizens or US permanent residents (green card holders).
HOW MANY FELLOWS ARE CHOSEN?
For the Summer 2017, one Fellow be placed at each of our Host Institutions. This means all of our applications will be narrowed down to a total of approximately seventy-five finalists, from which a group of twenty-five Fellows will be chosen.
