Lillian Saub is a junior at The University of Alabama majoring in Aerospace Engineering with minors in Mechanical Engineering and Physics. Lilly has always had a wide range of interests, and enjoyed music and creative writing, but also had a passion for math and science. It was this realization that led her to pursue engineering, because she thought it would allow her to combine her active imagination with her desire to keep learning new things – or in other words, she thought engineering was the best way to please both the left and right sides of her brain. Her fascination with the stars and galaxies beyond led her to discover that the realm of aerospace engineering was where she truly belonged.

Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Lilly soon realized that no schools in her home state offered aerospace engineering as a major, and that she would have to look elsewhere to follow her dreams. After searching all across the United States, Lilly decided that The University of Alabama was not only an excellent engineering school, but the home of a welcoming community, and soon became a part of the Crimson Tide family. Most of Lilly’s involvement at school has been through the Alabama Rocketry Association (ARA), where she has been able to develop a broad knowledge of solid and liquid powered rockets.

Last year, Lilly was a part of the NASA Student Launch Competition Design Team, and was able to assist in the research, selection, and assembly of the solid rocket motors for their sub-scale and final launches. Currently, Lilly not only serves as the Chief Safety Officer for ARA, but is also a member of the FAR Dollar Per Foot Competition Liquids Design Team. As Chief Safety Officer, Lilly has been in charge of writing and enforcing the Safety Handbook and Standard Operating Procedures, and making sure all members are prioritizing their safety in and out of the lab. On the testing sub-team for liquids, Lilly has assisted in the redesign and reassembly of the engine, and has also been designated as the safety officer for all water flow, cold flow, and hot fire tests.

As a 2023 Brooke Owens Fellow, Lilly will be interning with Ultra Safe Nuclear in Seattle, Washington. Lilly greatly appreciates this opportunity and is thankful for all that the Brooke Owens Fellowship has done for her.
