GWENDOLYN TSAI
(she/her)

  • Brooke Owens Fellow, Class of 2022

  • Johns Hopkins University, B.S. Mechanical Engineering, ‘22

  • Host Institution: Hermeus

  • Executive Mentor: Rob Meyerson

  • Brookie Mentor: Michaela Hemming

Gwen is a senior at Johns Hopkins University studying Mechanical Engineering. Within MechE, she has focused on fluid mechanics and thermodynamics with interests in topics like propulsion and thermal management systems. Her first memory of being interested in Aerospace was looking out the window while flying as a kid and wondering how and why the wing flaps moved. As an adult she still picks a window seat over the wings when possible, so that she can marvel at the engineering involved with taking off and landing.

On campus at Hopkins, Gwen has been involved in the JHU Baja team, Blue Jay Racing, and completed research in the Fluid Transport Laboratory. She is also currently working on a senior design project for the Space Telescope Science Institute (STSci) designing a model segmented mirror to be used for coronagraph development. During her undergraduate education she has also held internships at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, where she completed structural analysis for the Europa Clipper, and the Caltech Department of Aerospace, where she created a model for nuclear reactor cooling systems.

Outside of school Gwen loves cooking, playing with her dogs, and spending time outdoors.

This summer, Gwen will be interning at Hermeus where she is excited to learn more about hypersonic jet engines.
