Jade Nguyen

  • Brooke Owens Fellow, Class of 2020

  • Stanford University, Bioengineering, ‘22

  • Host Institution: Bryce Space and Technology

  • Mentor: Aprille Ericsson

Jade Nguyen is a sophomore at Stanford University studying bioengineering with a passion for aerospace medicine and engineering. She is also on the premedical track with aspirations to one day treat astronauts. Jade grew up around the health field and a deep curiosity for the boundaries of human exploration. She realized that the intersection of those two interests would lay the groundwork for all of her future studies.

Jade is very involved in her community and campus. She is Co-Lead for the Rockets Team for the Stanford Student Space Initiative. She helps lead 80 engineers and dozens of rockets projects including Stanford's first Rockoon. She also is the Co-Lead for the Operations Team which oversees the entire organization, the largest student group on campus, with roughly 350 active members. She has also served as technical lead for recovery of a space-bound rocket, Diversity and Inclusion Co-Lead for the organization, and one of the Policy Team representatives that spoke to the United Nations Committee on Peaceful Use of Outer Space last April in Vienna in collaboration with a non-profit called For All Moonkind.

Last summer, she worked in the Biology Inspired Research and Design Laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Stanford studying hummingbird wing flight patterns to aid in the design of aerial vehicles. She has also worked in local politics in her hometown of St. Peters, Missouri, doing interviews for local elections and doing advocacy work for local environmental issues.

Jade is active with the First-Generation Low-Income Community on campus. She helps plan community bonding and resources events with a focus on making engineering and STEM more accessible to low-income women like herself. She has also sung with an alt-rock indie acapella group, been involved with the Stanford Vietnamese Student Association, and helped tutor local middle schoolers. Jade is also now working towards her Emergency Medical Technician certification to start her career in medical practice.

As a Brooke Owens Fellow, Jade is extremely excited to start working with Bryce this coming summer.
