Brookie Mentor: TBD
Sofia is a junior studying Physics and Computer Science at Harvey Mudd College (HMC). Her love of gazing at the stars as a child has grown into a fascination with how invisible forces shape our universe. She is passionate about using computation and technology to better understand these phenomena. Her work is guided by a belief that scientific discovery should advance knowledge and also be accessible to the public. With this, she is thrilled to intern at Slooh this summer.
Sofia has developed her passion for aerospace through both observational and computational research. As a researcher at the Green Bank Observatory, she explored galaxy formation and engaged with scientists studying radio emissions and large-scale cosmic structure. There, she developed a real-time, web-based dashboard to unify access to multiple Green Bank Telescope data sources and software systems into a single interface.
At HMC, Sofia conducted computational research on three-body planetary systems, using numerical simulations to analyze orbital stability and extract predictive features from short integrations of orbits. Through this work, she gained experience in simulation design and translating complex dynamical behavior into interpretable models. She is particularly interested in how computational tools can reveal structure in chaotic systems and inform our understanding of planetary system formation and evolution.
Sofia is committed to giving back to her community by mentoring others and helping make STEM spaces more inclusive. She served as a Physicists Inspiring Next Generation (PING) mentor, supervising 20 rising ninth-grade students in hands-on STEM activities and guiding a group conducting radio observations and data analysis. Through this work, she aims to continue supporting the next generation of scientists and create pathways that make space science more accessible.
In her free time, she enjoys listening to music, traveling, arts and crafts, going on walks, and spending time with her friends and family.
