  • Brooke Owens Fellow, Class of 2020

  • Princeton University, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, ‘22

  • Host Institution: Sierra Nevada Corporation

  • Mentor: Tory Bruno

Sophie Amiton is a sophomore majoring in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and pursuing a certificate in Applications of Computing. Originally from Portland Oregon, she grew up living all over the place! Before moving to Princeton for university, she lived in Bangkok, Beijing, and Bombay, and she hopes to visit every continent someday!

Her love for engineering and applied math was fostered at a young age by her math-loving-father. However, it wasn’t until studying astrophysics in high school that she developed a passion for space exploration!

At Princeton, Sophie serves as the Community Team and Communications Director of the Dominican Republic Chapter of Engineers Without Borders and is currently working on a project to provide potable water to a community in El Cajuil. She loves exploring the intersection between engineering and making a positive impact on under-served communities, and can’t wait to continue doing so as she pursues a career in aerospace!

In her free time, she loves reading fantasy series and baking desserts in preparation for her eventual debut on Masterchef! Sophie also enjoys the performing arts. She is an active member of Child’s Play Improv Comedy as their Publicity Chair, and you can catch her in productions with Theatre Intime—her most memorable performance was in Seascape as a human-sized talking lizard!

As a Brooke Owens Fellow, Sophie is excited to be joining Sierra Nevada Corporation’s Dream Chaser Spacecraft team in Colorado!
